Quality Cloisonne Lapel Pins
Cloisonne lapel pins have a flat surface, but are not completely smooth to touch. Each cloisonne lapel pin is a hand-made work of art, and each color is hand filled with a colored glass.
Just like with stained glass, each color must be separated by a thin metal border. The metal border is usually plated with your choice of metal plating.
Quality Lapel Pin Design Tips:
If your cloisonne lapel pin design is correct, the metal border will only add to it’s beauty. To make the design correct, we must avoid hairline metal borders and fine details which are too small for die-striking.
A common mistake is to try to create very small text which is too miniature to read. It is a good rule of thumb to avoid sentences of text. If several words must be used on a one inch sized pin, it may be preferable to have the text wrap around the border of the design.
Production of Cloisonne Lapel Pins
Our artists have been making cloisonne lapel pins for many generations. They stay true to the original process which was developed ages ago.
To create a cloisonne lapel pin, they start by die-striking a piece of copper or brass alloy. Once the metal is formed into shape, it is carefully cleaned before they fill in the recessed areas with a colored glass powder. The pin and colored glass powder are fired in a kiln.
Finally, a metal plating is given to the remaining uncolored areas of the pins.
